Learn English Grammar : Simple Present Tenses

     



      Simple Present Tense is the very basic in English tenses, but sometimes we use it wrong when it comes to TOEFL test. Simple present tense is basically used on an action that happened right now or an action that happened regularly,  to make easy on this explanation, here  we use simple present tenses

1.    To express a fact,

  • Biology is the study of life and living organism
  • Earth orbits the sun
  • You are my girlfriend (lol)
  • There are sayings, that money doesn't grow on trees
  • Greatsword is heavy

2.    To express routinely or habit, at present time (at now perspective)
In this case, it usually uses an adverb of frequency such as: always, seldom, never, often, etc

  • You check your Facebook feed every 5 second
  • You always go to school in the morning
  • She never wears a bikini
  • Mr. Amber runs every morning



3.    To express feeling or emotions
Usually uses static verb such as, feel, worry, love

  • I love you my darling
  • She worries about her dog (going to eat her homework)
  • He feels great after listening to Taylor Swift song

4.    To express ownership or logic connection between things
Also usually uses verb like has/have, belong, consist, 

  • I have a Lamborghini
  • The dog belongs to Christina
  • This organization consist of fifty member
  • The chicken belong to my grandfather

5.    To express an idea or opinion

  • I think you must go now
  • I think these politicians are bad
  • I agree with this decision

6.    To give instruction

  • Give this key to my children 
  • Push the red button to launch nuke

7.    Something that has been scheduled

  • My plane departs at six o’clock

8.    Future event after conjunctions such as when, as soon as, before, after, etc

  • She uploads her facebook status as soon as she arrives at home
  • I come here after you call me



How to write simple present tense?

Here is the formula


1.    Positive

Subject + Verb 1 (+s/es) + object, 


  • I drink a coffee
  • You put your wallet 
  • She makes a cake


Subject + to be (is, am , are) +adverb/adjective

  • I am strong
  • You are a good student
  • She is beautiful
  • They are gossipers
  • Jerry is a rich person
  • They are professional vampire hunter
  • You are the champion
  • This is my works


2.    Negative

Subject + do/does + not + verb 1 + object

  • I do not drink coca cola
  • You don’t always visit your favorite bar
  • She doesn’t come here usually


Subject + to  be (is, am , are) + not + adjective/adverb

  • I am not your enemy
  • You are not here for him
  • She is not a good friend
  • She is not intelligent girl
  • It is not a new computer



3.    Interogative

Do/Does + subject + verb 1 + object + ?

  • Do I know you?
  • Do you bring it?
  • Does she use Instagram?
  • Does she make you jealous?


To be (is+am+are) + subject + adverb/adjective +?

  • Am I good?
  • Are you happy?
  • Is he okay?
  • Am I an eccentric man?
  • Is she here?

  • The singular third person (he/she/it) uses “s” or “es” on its verb
  • Becarefull which uses “s” or “es”, example of verb using es: watches, washes, fixes, dresses
  • The auxiliary, “does” is used only for first person singular (she, he, it), others use “do”.
